Try a Mountain Dulcimer – Clark Parry & Cindy Durkee
This is a fun and easy instrument that can be used in a jam session, to accompany voices, or all by yourself!

Learn to Play the Washboard – Mick Smyer
The washboard is a fun percussion instrument that’s full of complexities but easy to get started on. We will explore basic rhythm patterns, progress to “trading fours” and consider the role of the “second line” in bluegrass, dixieland, zydeco, and other traditional music forms. Washboards will be available for purchase.

Funny Songs – Tim Craven
Bring your voice, an instrument too if you’d like, and come prepared for some fun!

Old Time Tunes – Jerry Trusty
For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner. Some tunes will be learned by ear and some from music.

Swedish Tunes – Rachel Hall
Come join a “Gammeldans Band,” which plays music for Scandinavian dancing. Sheet music will be provided, with chords and harmony parts, for a march, waltz, and slow polska. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

How to Learn by Ear – Patty Lambert
Trying to learn tunes by ear can be tough. Patty will share tips and shortcuts to make it easier.

String Instrument Sampler – Celia & Jerry
Have you ever wanted to try a guitar or fiddle? Or maybe a mandolin or banjo, but never have the opportunity? Now is your chance to try a variety stringed instrument and see which one strikes a chord with you.

West African Drumming – Kelly Parker
You’ll learn the basics of playing West African djembe as well as traditional West African rhythms. Bring a drum or use one of Kelly’s.

Introduction to Shape Note Singing – Clark & Cindy
Shape Note Singing, also called Sacred Harp Singing is a 200-year-old American tradition of singing four-part harmony by following music with shaped notes. The music is sung loud with strong rhythms, simple open harmonies, and a strong sense of community. It’s easier than it sounds!

Irish Session Tunes: Reels – Patty Lambert & Holly Foy
We’ll look at some well-known and lesser-played Irish reels. We will work by ear with sheet music provided at the end of the workshop. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

Jigs from Pennsylvania – Karen Hirshon & Linda Littleton
Learn some wonderful but lesser-known jigs collected in Pennsylvania. Sheet music and chords will be provided. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

How to Jam -  Mike Rovine & Henry Koretzky
If you’ve sat quietly at jam sessions wishing you knew how to jump into the music, this session is for you. We’ll start from the beginning and show you step by step how to join in on tunes you don’t know. For all instruments, advanced beginner.

Try an Autoharp – Linda Huber
For the absolute beginner or non-musician, autoharp is a wonderful first instrument – and it’s also a good choice for those that want to branch out to a new instrument.

Forgotten but Familiar Songs – Paul Fagley
Many of the hit songs of Tin Pan Alley long ago have been forgotten, but remain with us in the background of our culture. Lyrical phrases morphed into a slang term and snippets of melodies in old cartoons will be at once familiar to us, yet we don't remember that there was a song behind these bits. Another in a series exploring our pop music heritage - before it "popped."

Contradance Basics – Bob Nicholson
Contradancing is easy enough that you’ll be fine at the evening dance even if you’ve never tried it before. But you’ll have a better time if you come to this workshop to learn the basics. Live music provided by Mike Rovine. Participants who know the contradance repertoire are welcome to join in.

Harmony Singing – Celia Millington-Wyckoff & Tim Craven
Learn to make your voices blend in beautiful harmony! For all levels of singers.

Virginia Tunes Collected by John Ashby – Joe DeZarn & Keith Carr
Come learn a great tune or two in the style of John Ashby, from the Free State in Virginia. We’ll look at John's versions of Jaybird Died of the Whooping Cough, and time permitting, Lady of the Lake. We will work by ear with music provided at the end of the workshop. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

Best Known Jam Tunes – John Lamancusa
In jam sessions, does it seem like you never hear the same tune twice? The secret is revealed: There ARE a few tunes that are quite popular in instrumental jams. We’ll look at several very common tunes so that you can build a repertoire for jamming. We’ll mostly work by ear, but music will be available as well. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

Getting Started on the Guitar – Diana Wagner
Starting a new instrument can be intimidating and even overwhelming. Diana will offer some practical tips on how to get acquainted with this versatile instrument and get started on the right foot.  Beginner to advanced beginner.

Honoring Pennsylvania Heritage Musician Clyde Wilson of the Stone Valley Boys
In this special session, we will honor long-time Pennsylvania musician Clyde Wilson. The session will be mainly chatting and hearing the Clyde’s stories, but there will be some jamming and listening to Clyde play as well. Facilitated by Karen Hirshon, Linda Littleton, and Henry Koretzky.

Jamming – John Lamancusa & Diana Wagner
This will be a mix of instrumentals and singing including all styles of music.

Family Dance – Bob Nicholson
Bob will teach accessible contra, square, circle, singing, and international dances. An open band will be coordinated by Mike Rovine.

Beginners’ Jam – Clark Parry, Cindy Durkee & Linda Huber
A fun, supportive jam for those who are new to their instruments or new to jamming. Mountain dulcimers and autoharps will be provided, and total non-musicians are welcome.

Songs Collected by Carl Sandburg – Jerry Trusty
Carl Sandburg was an early 20th Century poet, historian, and yes, folk musician and song collector. He was one of the first to publish a collection of folk songs from all over the U.S. and in a variety of genres. We will play and sing several songs.  All instruments, voices, and levels welcome.

Quebecois Waltzes – Joe DeZarn & Keith Carr
Learn a delicious new waltz or two from the Quebecois repertoire: Raynald Oulette's Valse Spiral, and Phillip Bruneau's Complainte de Folkloriste. This workshop will be pure, vieux école learning by ear, with music provided at the end of the workshop. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

Intro to Contradance Backup – Henry Koretzky
We’ll work on playing simple backup for contradance tunes. The goal is to prepare advanced beginner backup players to play a tune or two during the evening contradance. For all backup instruments.

Jamming with Clyde Wilson – Karen Hirshon & Linda Littleton
A mix of singing and instrumentals, especially featuring Pennsylvania Heritage Musician Clyde Wilson. This will be mostly jamming, but also some chatting and hearing more of Clyde’s stories.

Percussion Jam – Kelly Parker
West African drumming, American washboard playing, and everything in between. The goal is to unlock the inner percussionists in us all!

Carter Family Songs – Clark Parry & Cindy Durkee
We’ll sing songs by this famous family and discuss their history and influence. Lyrics & chords will be provided.

Southwestern Tunes – John Lamancusa
Join John and explore a few tunes from the American Southwest. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

O’Carolan Tunes – Linda Huber
We’ll look at some of the wonderful tunes composed by Irish Harper Turlough O’Carolan. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

Hearing Chord Changes – Diana Wagner
Learn to hear and identify common chords and chord changes and to understand where and when they occur.

Contra & Square Dance Band – Rachel, Celia & Bob
We’ll look over the music that the open band will play at the evening dance. Music and chords will be provided. Note: If you miss this session, it’s still ok to play for the dance – and it’s also ok to go to this session but not play for the dance.

A good old-fashioned hymn sing with well-known and lesser-known hymns. Bring your instrument if you play. Song sheets with chords will be provided. This workshop is free and open to the public.

Hurdy Gurdy, Diddly Bow and other Weird Instruments – Diana Wagner & David Gillett
Variety is the spice of life! Come see, hear, and try several unusual instruments. If you have a weird instrument, bring it along.

Swing Tunes – Henry Koretzky
You’ll learn some swing tunes, and you’ll also learn how to make it swing. Remember, “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing!” We’ll try to learn by ear but music will be available if needed.

Playing in the Irish Style – Patty Lambert & Holly Foy
There’s a difference between just playing Irish tunes and making them really sound Irish. Come learn the nuances. We will work both from written music and by ear. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

Clawhammer Guitar – Jerry Trusty
Clawhammer guitar? Yes! We’ll be playing on guitars but using clawhammer banjo technique. This is your chance to add a really different sound to your repertoire. For guitar and banjo players, all levels beyond beginner.

String Instrument Maintenance & Repair – John Lamancusa & Kerry Grendon
We’ll discuss the basics of string instrument care and maintenance to help keep your instrument in top shape and sounding its best. Bring your ailing instruments for diagnosis and advice.

Tunes that are Cooler than They are Hard – Rachel Hall & Melissa Kacalanos
Come learn a few refreshing tunes that are manageable but fun and groovy! We’ll try to learn by ear but music will be available if needed. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

Improvisation – Mike & Celia
Improvisation makes music SO MUCH FUN! Learn some tips about how to improvise and then we’ll give it a try. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

Autoharp Techniques – Linda Huber
Tips and techniques for autoharpers.  All levels beyond beginner.

Left Hand Techniques for Fretted String Instruments – Karen Hirshon
Hammer-ons, pull-offs and other techniques for all fretted string instruments.

Old Time Tunes with Lyrics – Jerry Trusty
This won’t be old time songs, but rather old time fiddle tunes that have lyrics, for example Old Joe Clark, Angelina Baker, or June Apple. For all instruments beyond beginner, all levels of singers.

West African Drumming – Kelly Parker
This session will go beyond what a drum circle generally teaches. You’ll learn the basics of playing West African Djembe as well as traditional West African rhythms.

Pennsylvania Reels – John Lamancusa & Henry Koretzky
We’ll look at a variety of lesser-known reels collected in Pennsylvania. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

Backing up Jigs, Reels & Waltzes – Joe DeZarn & Keith Carr
For all instruments, even those not usually considered to be backup instruments. All levels beyond beginner.

Fiddle Techniques – Karen Hirshon & Linda Littleton
We’ll focus on bow arm techniques that will improve your tone and articulation. You’ll learn some easy exercises, and we’ll look at ways to practice tunes in order to encourage musical flexibility and vitality.

How to prepare, what to do during your concert and more.
